Free Rhino 3DM Version Converter
Convert a Rhino 8 .3dm file to Rhino 5, 6 or 7, or save between Rhino 5-8 archive versions. The conversion runs privately in your browser.
Private browser-only conversion: the model is not uploaded to or stored by JewelModel.
Convert Rhino 8 files for older Rhino versions
When a jeweler, CAD studio, or workshop uses an older Rhino release, a newer .3dm file may not open. This free converter rewrites the file as a Rhino 5, 6, 7, or 8 archive without requiring Rhino to be installed.
It changes the 3DM archive version only. It does not convert 3DM to STL, repair geometry, make a model casting-ready, or add jewelry sprues.
Useful for
- Opening Rhino 8 files in Rhino 5, 6, or 7
- Sharing a compatible 3DM copy with clients, jewelers, and production partners
- Checking the source version, units, layers, geometry types, and object count before saving
What the converter checks
The browser engine reads the source, writes the selected archive version, then opens the result again for a basic verification.
- The original file stays unchanged.
- Standard geometry, meshes, layers, units, and common object attributes are carried over when the target version supports them.
- The output archive version and object count are checked before download.
What can change in a Rhino downgrade
An older archive cannot represent every feature introduced in a newer Rhino release. The converter reports relevant compatibility notes after it reads the file.
- SubD, annotations, materials, textures, and rendering data added in newer Rhino releases may be simplified or omitted.
- Plug-in-specific data may require the same plug-in in the receiving Rhino installation.
- Object-count verification does not prove that geometry is closed, watertight, manifold, or suitable for casting.
- Always inspect the converted file in Rhino before editing, printing, or manufacturing.
How to convert a 3DM file
Three steps; no account or upload is required.
- Choose your 3DM file
Drop or select a .3dm file up to 250 MB. The browser reads its version, units, layers, and geometry summary.
- Select Rhino 5, 6, 7, or 8
Choose the archive version required by the person or system that will open the file.
- Convert, verify, and download
The tool rewrites the file, reopens the result locally, checks its archive version and object count, then creates a temporary download.
Rhino 3DM converter FAQ
Can I convert a Rhino 8 file to Rhino 5?
Yes. Open the Rhino 8 .3dm file, choose Rhino 5, and convert it. Features that Rhino 5 cannot represent may be simplified or removed, so inspect the result before production.
Is my 3DM file uploaded to JewelModel?
No. Reading, conversion, verification, and download preparation happen in this browser tab. JewelModel servers do not receive or store the model.
Do I need Rhino installed?
No. The converter uses a browser-based rhino3dm/openNURBS engine. A modern browser with JavaScript and WebAssembly support is required.
Can this convert 3DM to STL, STEP, or OBJ?
Not in the current version. It saves a .3dm file in a selected Rhino archive version; it does not change the model into another file format.
Does the converter repair geometry or add jewelry sprues?
No. It does not close open geometry, fix non-manifold meshes, change wall thickness, or create casting sprues. Those operations require a dedicated CAD review.
How do I know the converted model is safe to manufacture?
The tool verifies that the output can be reopened and checks its archive version and object count. This is not a manufacturing validation; inspect topology, dimensions, tolerances, and casting requirements in Rhino before production.
